Upgrade to Shrimp Room V1.2

So now that the reservoir is ready, it’s time to direct the water where to go to and how to get there.

Initially, I wanted to depend on just 1 main and 6 distribution lines but after tweaking several times, it just doesn’t work as well as I had hoped it would.

So ended up with 2 independent mains and 5 distribution lines. It wasn’t that smooth initially but the system proved to be much more effective and got more stable as it goes. And here’s how I got it to work.

Thanks to Aquarist Chamber for keeping stock of the water auto top-up valve system, I managed to get my hands on them for this upgrade. They are really easy to assemble and use, almost like a plug-and-play system.

The rest of the parts that are required would simply be the white 1/4″ filter hose (as they are commonly known as) and intermediate connectors such as Tee joints and Elbow joints (Depending on how many tanks you have and intent to organise your system).

As advised, I had mine running from top to bottom, distributing to each tank using Tee joints. However, in order to have a steady flow of water into each tank simultaneously, fine-tuning such as water “balancing” have to be done. This means that the Tee-joint should be placed in such a way that the flow of water will enter into both distributing outlets.

And before any water movement can be achieved, you would need to “drink” some water to get the ball rolling!! By the way, I did drink quite a bit as I “research” for the best flow!!

It’s all worth it as I had to spend much time each week maintaining the water level. Now, I can place more time on conducting better water change and spend more time with my family!!

Should you be keen to start such a system, do feel free to drop me a mail.

  1. hello Matt, nice blog!!
I want to build shrimp room too, like yours
Need to know about the room temp, i don’t see any Air Conditioner and chiller
what do you use to keep the tank temp low? is it hard to control and stabilize the temp within the display room? (especially when the outside temp is hot)

    • Hi John,

I do use Air-Conditioner for my shrimp room and the temperature on the thermostat is kept at 25*C. This would be the easiest and cost effective way of keeping multiple tanks at the preferred temperature (compared to having 2 or more tank chillers)
